On August 29, 1951, a tragic incident occurred, claiming two lives.

Adjutant Jozef DE BRUYNE, along with his team consisting of corporals Armand ANDRIES, Edmond NUYTS, Alphonse DENDOOVEN, and soldiers Désiré VAN HOVE and Louis VAN HAUW, was tasked that day with a dangerous operation: the destruction of munitions in the 'putten' (pits) of Meerdaal. This was a routine mission for the Peloton Brabant-Hainaut of DOVO/SEDEE.

According to the report of the team leader, the accident took place around 9:55 AM. The team had pushed a cart filled with projectiles along the Deceauvillestraat to the first pit. This was the usual route to reach the pits. Upon arrival at the first pit, the team began unloading the munitions, preparing to destroy them. The plan was to continue to the second pit to fill it. However, for an unknown reason, a 105mm shell exploded in the hands of Edmond NUYTS. It is uncertain whether the shell fell or exploded spontaneously. What is certain is that both Edmond NUYTS and Armand ANDRIES were killed instantly by the powerful explosion.

The team leader reacted quickly and began administering first aid to the wounded – Alphonse DENDOOVEN, Désiré VAN HOVE, and Louis VAN HAUW. A doctor from the BEVEKOM Air Base, Under-Lieutenant Doctor DELAMOTTE, arrived on-site swiftly, and the wounded were transported to the Military Hospital in Brussels for further treatment.

The autopsy conducted by Dr. A. GEYS revealed that both victims died instantly. Edmond NUYTS had lost his entire left forearm, sustained severe injuries to his abdomen and chest, and had lost his right eye along with an open wound to the skull. Armand ANDRIES had a large open wound to his forehead and his lower leg was completely shattered, in addition to other fatal injuries.

Dr. GEYS, appointed by Military Prosecutor FRENAULT, concluded that the deaths were the result of the "explosion of a bomb."

The special report, prepared by Major PORRWIJCK, Commanding Officer of DOVO, states that the families of the victims were informed of this tragic event by the army's social services.

The Commanding Officer of the Peloton Brabant-Hainaut at the time, Captain-Commandant Maurice DIEU, would later succeed Major René PORRWIJCK as the Corps Commander.

The wounded included Corporal Alphonse DENDOOVEN, who sustained multiple injuries to both legs; Corporal Louis VAN HAUW, who suffered injuries to his left shoulder and light bruising to his left leg; and Corporal Désiré VAN HOVE, who had an open fracture in his knee as well as injuries to his head and left hip. The latter was sent immediately by the team leader to the Meerdaal depot to seek help.

The accident was acknowledged as an incident in the line of duty, with no fault on the part of the involved soldiers.

This tragic event was the third and final fatal accident that occurred at the Meerdaal spring pits.

Op 29 augustus 1951 voltrok zich een tragisch incident dat twee dodelijke slachtoffers eiste.

Adjudant Jozef DE BRUYNE, samen met zijn ploeg bestaande uit korporaals Armand ANDRIES, Edmond NUYTS, Alphonse DENDOOVEN en de soldaten Désiré VAN HOVE en Louis VAN HAUW, werd die dag belast met een gevaarlijke taak: de vernietiging van munitie in de 'putten' van Meerdaal. Dit was een dagelijkse routine voor het Peloton Brabant-Henegouwen van DOVO.

Volgens het verslag van de de ploegleider, Jozef DE BRUYNE gebeurde het ongeval rond 9u55. De ploeg had een wagen vol projectielen via het deceauvillespoor naar de eerste put geduwd. Dit spoor was de gebruikelijke route om de putten te bereiken. Bij de eerste put aangekomen, begon de ploeg de munitie af te laden, de voorloper van hun taak om de projectielen in de put te vernietigen. Het plan was om verder te rijden en de tweede put te vullen. Maar door een onbekende oorzaak ontplofte een 105 mm obus in de handen van Edmond NUYTS. Of de obus gevallen was of spontaan ontploft is onzeker. Wat wel zeker is, is dat zowel Edmond NUYTS als Armand ANDRIES onmiddellijk het leven lieten door de krachtige explosie.

De ploegleider reageerde snel en begon de gewonden – Alphonse DENDOOVEN, Désiré VAN HOVE en Louis VAN HAUW – de eerste hulp te verlenen. Een arts van de Vliegbasis BEVEKOM, Onderluitenant Geneesheer DELAMOTTE, was snel ter plaatse, en de gewonden werden overgebracht naar het Militair Hospitaal in Brussel voor verdere behandeling.

Korporaal Alphonse DENDOOVEN, en Korporaal Louis VAN HAUW sluiten zich door middel van hun verklaringen aan bij dat van de ploegleider.

Uit de lijkschouwing van Dr. A. GEYS blijkt dat beide slachtoffers op slag waren overleden. Edmond NUYTS had zijn gehele linkeronderarm verloren, had ernstige verwondingen aan buik en borstkas, en het verlies van zijn rechteroog door een open schedelwond. Armand ANDRIES had een grote open wond op zijn voorhoofd en zijn onderbeen was volledig verbrijzeld, naast andere fatale verwondingen.

Dr. GEYS, benoemd door Militair Auditeur FRENAULT, concludeerde dat de doden het gevolg waren van de "ontploffing van een bom".

De bijzonder verslagen (van Armand ANDRIES en dat Edmond NUYTS) opgesteld door Majoor PORRWIJCK, Korpscommandant van DOVO, vermeldt dat de families van de slachtoffers door de sociale dienst van het leger op de hoogte werden gesteld van dit tragische voorval.

Een omstandig verslag voor Armand ANDRIES en voor Edmond NUYTS is opopgesteld door de Commandant van het Peloton Brabant-Henegouwen op dat moment, Kapitein-Commandant Maurice DIEU. Hij zal Majoor René PORRWIJCK opvolgen als Korpscommandant.

De gewonden waren Korporaal Alphonse DENDOOVEN, die meerdere verwondingen aan beide benen had; Korporaal Louis VAN HAUW , die verwondingen aan zijn linkerschouder en lichte kneuzingen aan zijn linkerbeen opliep; en Korporaal Désiré VAN HOVE, die een open breuk aan zijn knie had, evenals verwondingen aan zijn hoofd en linkerbil. Laatstgenoemde werd na het ongeval door de ploegchef naar het depot van Meerdaal gestuurd om hulp te halen. Zoals gewoonlijk werden er ook omstandige verslagen opgesteld voor Korporaal Alphonse DENDOOVEN, Korporaal Louis VAN HAUW en Korporaal Désiré VAN HOVE

Het ongeval werd erkend als een incident in de uitoefening van de dienst, zonder schuld van de betrokken militairen zoals beschreven in het advies dat werd getekend door Kolonel STACQUET, commandant van de A.D.A.T.

Dit tragische voorval was het derde en laatste dodelijke ongeluk dat plaatsvond bij de springputten van Meerdaal

Le 29 août 1951, un tragique incident se produisit, faisant deux victimes mortelles.

L'Adjudant Jozef DE BRUYNE, accompagné de son équipe composée des caporaux Armand ANDRIES, Edmond NUYTS, Alphonse DENDOOVEN et des soldats Désiré VAN HOVE et Louis VAN HAUW, avait pour mission ce jour-là une tâche dangereuse : la destruction de munitions dans les 'putten' de Meerdaal. Cette opération faisait partie des tâches quotidiennes du Peloton Brabant-Hainaut du SEDEE.

Selon le rapport du chef d'équipe, l'accident s'est produit vers 9h55. L'équipe avait poussé un wagon rempli de projectiles via le chemin de fer de Deceauvilles vers le premier puits. Ce chemin était la route habituelle pour atteindre les puits. Arrivés au premier puits, l'équipe commença à décharger les munitions, en prévision de leur destruction. Le plan était de continuer vers le deuxième puits pour le remplir. Cependant, pour une raison inconnue, une obus de 105 mm explosa dans les mains d'Edmond NUYTS. Il est incertain si l'obus est tombé ou a explosé spontanément. Ce qui est certain, c'est que l'explosion fit immédiatement deux victimes mortelles : Edmond NUYTS et Armand ANDRIES.

Le chef d'équipe réagit rapidement en prodiguant les premiers secours aux blessés – Alphonse DENDOOVEN, Désiré VAN HOVE et Louis VAN HAUW. Un médecin de la base aérienne de BEVEKOM, le sous-Lieutenant Médecin DELAMOTTE, arriva rapidement sur les lieux et les blessés furent transportés à l'hôpital militaire de Bruxelles pour un traitement supplémentaire.

D'après l'autopsie pratiquée par le Dr A. GEYS, les deux victimes sont mortes sur le coup. Edmond NUYTS avait perdu son avant-bras gauche, présentait des blessures graves à l'abdomen et à la poitrine, ainsi qu'une perte de l'œil droit et une plaie ouverte au crâne. Armand ANDRIES avait une grande plaie ouverte à son front et sa jambe inférieure était complètement broyée, en plus d'autres blessures fatales.

Le Dr GEYS, désigné par le Procureur militaire FRENAULT, conclut que les deux victimes sont décédées des suites de « l'explosion d'une bombe ».

Le rapport spécial rédigé par le Major PORRWIJCK, commandant du corps DOVO, mentionne que les familles des victimes ont été informées de ce tragique événement par les services sociaux de l'armée.

Le commandant du Peloton Brabant-Hainaut à ce moment-là, le Capitaine-Commandant Maurice DIEU, succédera au Major René PORRWIJCK en tant que commandant du corps.

Les blessés étaient le Caporal Alphonse DENDOOVEN, qui avait subi plusieurs blessures aux deux jambes ; le Caporal Louis VAN HAUW, qui présentait des blessures à l'épaule gauche et des contusions légères à la jambe gauche ; et le Caporal Désiré VAN HOVE, qui avait une fracture ouverte au genou ainsi que des blessures à la tête et à la fesse gauche. Ce dernier fut envoyé immédiatement par le chef d'équipe au dépôt de Meerdaal pour chercher de l'aide.

L'accident fut reconnu comme un incident survenu dans l'exercice de leurs fonctions, sans que les militaires impliqués n'en soient responsables.

Cet incident tragique fut le troisième et dernier accident mortel survenu aux puits de Meerdaal.
